I have always loved group practice. Meditation can be seen as such a solitary preoccupation that practising amongst the company of others, creates an energy, a connection, a different dynamic.
So, when I stumbled across Empty Meadow community group whilst choosing where to donate my green token in Waitrose! I made a mental note of the name and got in touch when I got home. That was ago year now and our weekly sessions have gone from strength to strength, initially face to face, shifting online in lockdown and now back to face to face, with all the necessary precautions in place for this ever-shifting landscape we find ourselves in.
Ben Sturgess, founder of the project and group facilitator, has been leading the sessions from the project’s inception. From a medical background, Ben understands more than most the mind/body connection and has spent much time researching and understanding techniques to promote mental wellness.
Whilst this group is not a therapy practice nor a substitute for any prescribed treatment for mental health issues, what it is about is making meditation and mindfulness techniques accessible and available to all, community, shared experiences and tea! And both Ben and myself are committed to sharing the benefits of practice that we have learnt through our own personal journeys.
As Ben moves onto new adventures on the other side of the world our wish is to create not only a local community group but an international community group with Empty Meadow UK and Empty Meadow Australia meditating across continents! Truly a shared experience.
So as Ben says goodbye to our group for now, I will be facilitating the weekly sessions – 2 sessions a month at The Cartlodge in Horam and 2 sessions a month online via Zoom for our members a little further afield.
